The author's imagined biography of her difficult grandmother, who gained a degree of independence in a deeply patriarchal society but at the expense of love and emotional ties with her children.

A psychological thriller that keeps you reading to the ambiguous end. It paints a picture of a racist, misogynist, suburban society in the 1980s.

This novel seemed to miss some of the sparkle of earlier books in the series. However, I still enjoyed it and appreciated how sensitively Osman handled the issue of dementia.

Predictable, too long and overall, disappointing. The author touched on issues such as police harrassment and work discrimination, but did no more than identify them without delving into them in any depth.

Historical fiction, based on actual events, with the story told in alternating chapters by "Willie"/Maughan (third person) and Lesley (first person). The novel starts slowly and the descriptions are a little florid at times, but this novel is an enjoyable read successfully evoking a certain colonial period in Asia.Historical fiction, based on actual events, with the story told in alternating chapters by "Willie"/Maughan (third person) and Lesley (first person). Seven very good and slightly weird stories about men who are alone and/or lonely. I particularly enjoyed Kafka's "Metamorphosis" in reverse. Subtle, wry humor.
