The Highwayman - a ghost story which is a nice switch. I wish that the author would consider plots involving Western folklore.

The book is very formulaic. The author seems to have taken some current events and blended them together.

The topic is Western art, in particular, the sale of a missing painting, Custer's Last Fight, which is a switch. While less violent, the novel remains entertaining. I find it odd that Longmire's undersheriff, Vic Moretti, seems to have a significantly different personality in this novel compared to the TV series. The topic is Western art, in particular, the sale of a missing painting, Custer's Last Fight, which is a switch. A great read. All of these sea tales about survivors of wooden sailing ships wrecked in remote parts of the world are dramatic. I would rate "The Wager" at 4.0 stars.
In the era of the wooden sailing ship, it was quite common for ships to sink. What is surprising is that no one thought about carrying fishing gear for the survivors. The survivors are starving and there are no fishing rods, line, hooks, nets, spears or harpoons.
Also, some of these voyages lasted years. Yet no one packs a spare pair of boots. Survivors are found with bare frozen feet.A great read. All of these sea tales about survivors of wooden sailing ships wrecked in remote parts of the world are dramatic. I would rate "The Wager" at 4.0 stars.

"Independence Square" seems to have resolved the plot momentum problem of The Siberian Dilemma and Tatiana. Now, that the War in Ukraine is providing so many plot ideas for the machinations of Russian politics, it would be unfortunate if "Independence Square" is the last novel for the fictional investigator for the Office of Prosecution, Arkady Renko. For those who are intrigued by what is happening in Russia, I would rate "Independence Square" at 4.0 stars."Independence Square" seems to have resolved the plot momentum problem of The Siberian Dilemma and Tatiana. This book discusses the development of hydrofoil technology in Canada, in particular, HMCS Bras d'Or. Developing new technology is very expensive. Even today, the structural stresses on foils are so great that hydrofoils have been superseded by fast catamarans.
At least, HMCS Bras d'Or was saved and found a new home at the Musee Maritime du Quebec in L'Islet on the shores of the St. Lawrence River 100. km. below Quebec City. For its insight into the development of hydrofoil technology especially the work of Alexander Graham Bell, I would rate this book at 3.50 stars. This book discusses the development of hydrofoil technology in Canada, in particular, HMCS Bras d'Or. For Canadians, I think that the sinking of Canadian Pacific Steamship the "Empress of Ireland" in 1914 would be the most interesting. The "Empress of Ireland" collided with the collier "Storstad" in thick fog on the St. Lawrence River near Rimouski, Quebec. The death toll was 1,012 - 840 passengers and 172 crew.
This maritime disaster is often overlooked because of the sinking of the Titanic in 1912. It was difficult to compete for newspaper attention when a significant minority believed that retribution caused the sinking of the Titanic.
For those interested in how shipwrecks occur, I would rate this book at 3.50 stars. For Canadians, I think that the sinking of Canadian Pacific Steamship the "Empress of Ireland" in 1914 would be the most interesting. Some credit should go to Don Moore who looked after the plotlines for Flash Gordon, and dialog for each character, and who obviously inspired Alex Raymond's illustrated panels.More excellent panels of the future from 1937-41. It is surprising that it has taken so long for a book to be published on the aftermath of the Mutiny on the Bounty. I do not know where the author's claim came from that Fletcher Christian MAY have been murdered by a Tahitian man named Minarii. Although the author heavily discounts this claim as a tall tale, I think that the United Kingdom should do DNA analysis on the human remains on Pitcairn Island to finally answer the following question: Did Fletcher Christian, the Master's Mate and the leading mutineer, die on Pitcairn Island? It is surprising that it has taken so long for a book to be published on the aftermath of the Mutiny on the Bounty. Amos Walker still has great hardboiled private eye patter. He gets cranky when the bank robber in line ahead of him pulls a Glock and shouts at his teller - he shoots the robber in the kneecap. What this novel needs is more action. I would rate "Cutthroat Dogs" at only 3.50 stars.
