If you like historical crime and a strong female protagonist, you will love Maisie Dobbs. First, in a series of well researched but entertaining and imaginative narratives, Winspear introduces Maisie, a poor but extremely intelligent young woman who gets the chance to be highly educated. This is the 1900's, a time when scholarly women were usually from wealthy backgrounds. Maisie lies about her age, leaves university to go and nurse in World War One torn France, and on her return, after successfully investigating a crime becomes a detective, assisted by a few interesting characters. This a well written and informative sequence of novels.
