A person writing a WWII novel about the submarine war in the Pacific and POW camps in Japan isn't likely to write a better one than this. The 21st Century action packed escape-artist twists and turns would never have been attempted by anyone who actually experienced any of the events described in the book. Evidently researching the novel did provide a perspective for the author concerning a realistic view of Japanese, the Japanese Empire, and the savagery of behavior enjoyed by the entire Japanese population where POWs were vulnerable to them.
