Princess is misunderstood, gets her heart broken, but still has a heart of gold. Prince is misunderstood, gets his heart broken, and becomes a jerk. The people in the middle continue to get trampled. Okay, maybe that's a slight oversimplification. The pacing of this novel was terrific. Rhodes started us right out with betrayal and murder and didn't let up until the end. The world building was excellent. Magic is forbidden and as its users diminish in numbers (from being killed when found), it appears to be killing the world they live in as well. Rhodes builds up a good backstory that explains the origins of the magic, the religions of the kingdoms, and what the ultimate quest will be. I have to take a star off for just ending the book. I know that these big series are all the rage, but I like my books to stand on their own, not be cliffhangers. If Rowling, Martin and Tolkien could do it, so can you.
