The title "The Black Death" is appropriate, since it's a new version of "The Heart of Darkness". (Sorry: the pun was there, so I had to take the opportunity). Or you could call it "Apocalypse 500 Years Ago". Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne plays Osmund, a naive young monk who's not sure whether he wants to be a monk or go home to marry a girl from his village. She promises to wait for him in a glade downriver. When Sir Ulric (Sean Bean) is ordered to investigate a miraculously plague free village run by a notorious necromancer, Osmund goes along in hopes of finding the local lass. So off they go downriver, in their boat which is named the "Canned Heat" (Whoops, I'm sorry; I meant "their nameless barge"), encountering various atrocities and oddities, until they reach the village, where the most gruesome discovery of all awaits. This is a grim, moody picture, but if you're a Sean Bean/Eddie Redmayne fan or a Dark Ages nerd (like me), you'll enjoy it. "Game of Thrones" fans will be happy to see one of their favorite character actresses playing the necromancer. Must have been a fun discussion in "THe Game of Thrones" tea room.
