A bit more adult than Anne of Green gables - I wouldn't let a little kid read it. A bit depressing - lots of sad buts as a lot of people die, deal with poverty, cruelty, etc. Also the author carefully put in the 3 sets of twins (but she wasn't with them quite as long as she should have been), croup, etc that are mentioned in the books, but it doesn't seem to match up. For example, why would Anne's teacher bring her ipecac? Why would she learn about bosom friends when she was three? She also seems unnaturally bright and capable when she is far too young. A lot of the book happens when she is 6, but she acts like she is 12. Still, its well written and a good read.
