Gould discusses "progress" in evolution, offering a new definition (but note that the book was published 20 years ago). He reviews historical views on nature in an attempt to come up with a more reasonable measure than is commonly used. He was a baseball fan, so he addresses the disappearance of the .400 hitter, and how it relates to the changes in baseball over the last century-plus. This introduces the statistical background supporting his argument. He convinced me, but I'm a longtime fan of Gould's writing, so maybe you should read it for yourself.
