Relatively new director, S. Craig Zahler, has a definite way of taking ideas that we've all seen a dozen times before and turning them on their head. His formula is fairly simple: cast actors in unlikely roles; write efficient and smart dialog; use hyper-realistic violence to hit that raw nerve over and over. He also brings the setting to life. In this case the prison practically comes alive in all its digusting and brutal glory (even more so than the desert expanse in Bone Tomahawk).
