"...the absence of what I can still see so clearly in front of me makes it hard for me to breathe..." No enchanting landscape and bucolic environs, but the setting here is better and everywhere. I don't admit children tangled in evil deed and dark secrets appeal to me, however, this book gives more pleasure than fairy tales. A thin book, packed with rich stories, narrated in each character's unique inner voice and prose flowing in elegant ease. I resist the urge to read again, and wish to hear the sequels, e.g. "Anka in Big-House", "Martin and Linde after last tryst", "Rise of Alex", but none of these would be as tasteful to hang on the magic spell, when the characters grow into adulthood, pass the tender, anxious, and observant adolescence.
