Art dealers have been scouring the globe for the works of famous graffiti maestro Bansky and have been literally cutting them off the walls. Some are doing it for money, some are doing it for conservation; all of them are doing it without the permission of the artist. $aving Banksy (2017) takes a unique look at the art world and asks, “Who owns graffiti, and should transitory art be preserved?” I’m on the fence. I’m somewhat appalled by dealers trying to make a buck off an artist who won’t see a penny, and yet I’m reminded that we wouldn’t have Franz Kafka’s books if his friends had followed his wishes and burned them. When does art become ours and not theirs?
