Not to be confused with a story about the new movie (I knew this before getting into it), this book is simply a copy of the Hogwarts 1st-year students' textbook by the same name. For those who have read "Harry Potter & the Sorcerer's Stone", you may recall this book being listed among the supplies needed for 1st-years. That clarification being made, I enjoyed this book. Written as a fictional "science non-fiction" book about magical creatures, it gives a bit of a background on magical creatures & how they came to determine which creatures would be classified as "beasts" or "beings". Then it becomes an A-Z encyclopedia of all of the creatures that Newt Scamander had discovered & researched before this "book's publishing in 1929". Many of the creatures are ones that Harry Potter readers encountered throughout the 7-book series. Listening to the description of those creatures took me back to the time when it was mentioned in a Harry Potter book, making me relive those moments in that story. For that reason alone, I would've enjoyed this book. But that aside, I still would've enjoyed this book as I like drifting off to an imaginary world, picturing "fantastic beasts" as if they were real! Age recommendation: 10 & up (Some of the creatures are said to have "humans" on their diet. Therefore I would not recommend this book for those readers that cannot yet distinguish between real/not real.) On a scale of 1-10 stars, I give it 6.
