Since I read the first book, I was excited when I picked up the second book. Mind you it has been over a year since I read the series so it took a little while before I was finally all caught up with what happened towards the end of the first book. Betrayal at every turn. Mare was badly betrayed by Maven, who she thought she could trust.... but sadly it costed her so much near and dear to her.... and in this book betrayal comes at a much steeper cost. Maven is obsessed with Mare, the more she tries to run/fight back, the more ruthless Maven and his mother are with their pursuit and methods (all those poor lives caught in the crossfire). Mare is trying hard to come to terms with betrayal, her powers and her responsibilities are the 'head' of this rebellion. Yet.... with each passing day and action that she makes, she loses more and more of herself. She is forced to be the head of the rebellion or the Mare that people use to know her as, but never herself. I am not quite sure of the possible romantic angle between Mare, Cal and Maven.... I think it's best off not to have any romantic entanglement, just companionship and friendship between Mare and Cal when trying to take on Maven. So much tragedy happens, so much dire consequences, but if they stop what they are doing it's going to ensure the deaths of so much more at the hands of Maven. That prison break scene was epic and very entertaining to read for sure and that cliffhanger in the end. Wow!
