The work described in this book is a revelation to me and my fellow scientists concerned with evolution. For a layman it will be difficult to read with its long technical passages, but for those interested in the origins of life, it's worth the effort even if you have to skim portions. ? shows that life's origin and evolution are vastly more likely than previously thought, because millions of genotypes (physical arrangements of molecules) can produce the same phenotype (an effective functioning organism). Further, he shows that many mutations can leave an organism still capable of life, while still exploring a wide range of phenotypes, and that this is true for any molecule that folds up in order to perform its function - enzymes, proteins - and for RNA (almost certainly the first form of true life).
