Although about 15 years old now, this work by one of my favorite authors helps shed light on many little known countries, especially those that only achieved independence from the USSR less than ten years previously. He ventures alone with indefatigable resolve to the most remote locations, but always keeps the reader involved as he meditates upon the destiny of these struggling countries.

Beautifully written. You also learn about the history, both ancient and modern, in one of the world's hot beds of ethnic tensions. When you've finished the book, you feel you've been on a journey through time and space.
