Pittard's debut, The Fates Will Find Their Way, was beautiful. I loved being wrapped up in that book. Yet, the story wasn't there. To this day I can tell you some of the scenes and lines that captured me, but I can't really tell you what happened in the story. Feeling unsatisfied, I ached to read more of her work.

Reunion sacrifices some of the beauty in exchange for more plot. It's a good trade. The wonderfully drawn images are still sprinkled throughout, but this time there's a memorable story serving as the backbone of the novel.

The protagonist is a train wreck! I didn't even finish the book!

I just finished this book after reading it very quickly (only took about an evening and a half to read) and I keep oscillating between 3 and 3.5 stars. I will say this: I preferred The Fates Will Find Their Way (2011). Pittard's writing style is quick and conversational and her characters are flawed in "quirky" and humorous (if slightly superficial) ways. Reading Reunion felt like watching a dysfunctional-family rom-com: enjoyable for sure, but not life altering. Would make a fast and funny read during the holiday season when avoiding your own family drama.

Thanks Debwalker,
Gonna try to get this to read during Thanksgiving holiday when I finish the two I'm currently reading. It seems like it'd be apropos.

Messed up family saga when dad dies, leaving 3 ex-wives, one widow and four sets of children with issues, big issues.

And I do get it; some decisions are irreversible. But like I've said, sometimes it's the irreversible ones that help a person get to know herself a little better. It's the consequences that matter. It's the fact that there are no do-overs that makes life matter at all.
