All eyes are focused on the Vatican, hoping to see the puffs of white smoke signaling the selection of the next Pope, but this time, much more is at stake, for the new pontiff may be the only person who can bring peace to a world on the brink of nuclear war.

A beautiful film.

If the viewer ignores the philandering American TV news anchor (David Janssen), this movie is a riveting insight into the selection of a Pope and his role in a tense international political situation. It resonates with contemporary political developments too. Superb acting by Anthony Quinn.

the theme is one of overwhelming crisis: first, a tremendous social crisis triggers a political crisis; there is a crisis in leadership and a crisis of faith underlies all these consequences. Told with overlapping stories which mirror and envelope each other, integrity and trust are necessary for the solution; but will they win the day? Some very interesting questions and situations are raised.

Was very surprised how much I enjoyed this movie! Definitely will be watching it again! I've heard about it for years.
