1. There is closed caption but not subtitles.
2. Saw this years ago and did not recall its main plot until about 12 minutes into the film. Well worth a refresh watch.
3. On dvd box:
3.a. "Two thumbs up! A razor-sharp thriller." --- Siskel & Ebert
3.b. Sometimes good people do evil things.
3.c. Blurb: "The American dream in a gym bag. That's how three men size up what they've found in the snowy Minnesota woods. ... "

A slow-burn film that felt a little bit like FARGO to me, A SIMPLE PLAN tells the story of a prosperous man, his uneducated but good-hearted brother, and his brother's dim-witted loud-mouth friend who fall upon a bag of cash amidst a plane crash in the snowy Minnesota woods. Each with their own reasons for wanting the money (a pregnant wife, personal finance troubles, unemployment, etc.), they decide to keep the cash but not use it until news of the plane crash blows over for fear of getting caught. Greed is a powerful thing, though, and gets the better of the three (well, four, if you count the one brother's pregnant wife), leading to catastrophic deeds and irreversible consequences. A SIMPLE PLAN has an ambling pace, but a strong message that screams at the audience its message, loud and clear. You have to earn it to appreciate it; otherwise, it's just not worth it. I myself had very high expectations for the film, so I wasn't nearly as blown away as I needed to be to hit that oh-so-high bar. Still, for those who like dramas or thrillers with a slower pace, then I would recommend A SIMPLE PLAN.

This is a 1998 American neo-noir crime thriller directed by Sam Raimi, based on the 1993 novel of the same name by Scott B. Smith.
Although the screenplay seems far from the reality, it is a disgustingly and entertainingly well organized crime story.
The underlining theme is greed, which drives three men and their relatives crazy.
I'd say, it is acctually a quite complicated story with a simple, God-smiling and you-laughing ending.
Superb are the performances of all the actors.

Extreme story that makes you consider the corruptibility of ordinary people when faced with unearned good fortune.

Hank Mitchell: [narrating] When I was still just a kid, I remember my father telling me what he thought that it took for a man to be happy. Simple things, really. A wife he loves, a decent job, friends and neighbors who like and respect him. And for a while there, without hardly even realizing it, I had all that. I was a happy man.
===
Sarah Mitchell: And me. What about me? Spending the rest of my life, eight hours a day, with a fake smile plastered on my face checking out books. And then coming home to cook dinner for you, the same meals over and over again, whatever the week's coupons will allow. Only going out to restaurants for special occasions, birthdays or anniversaries. And even then having to watch what we order. Skipping the appetizer, coming home for dessert. You think that's gonna make me happy?
