Gaby has a farm where he raises lambs, but he doesn't have any sons, just the two daughters he has raised like princesses, who live far away in the big city. One day, the older daughter asks for money to save her house, which she fears will be lost in the midst of an impending separation. Gaby has an extreme sense of paternal duty and he decides to help his little girl by selling the farm. He sells everything and moves into a small apartment in the village down the road.

Avoid reading the film description and let the director slowly disclose it. Half of the film's merits are learning along with the protagonist what his future must be. This little gem from French Quebec, Canada includes excellent character development of a man in his sixth decade who may not have many decades left. Since he is a rather solitary soul, we need to listen closely to what he says to each next person as he determines his future life.

A really moving film of a farmer giving up farming after a lifetime on the same land. It is an amazing transition he goes through. He is a hero to me for the courage he had to face what needed to be done.

A Film Movement discovery that has won many award. The reason is clear, it is a marvelous French film. It touched my wife and I like few movies can do. I hope many of you will put ""The Auction" on hold and see a really wonderful film.

I felt very involved in the movie and caring for the main character. I felt strongly that the farmer made too large of a sacrifice for a daughter who he admits takes advantage of his support and generosity.

From farmer to small apartment dweller with no job and no loyal dog at his side - is that what one would wish for someone they truly loved?

Painfully slow, almost like real time.
