A space probe appears over 23rd century Earth, emanating strange sounds towards the planet, apparently waiting for something. As time goes on, the probe starts to cause major storms on Earth and threaten its destruction. James T. Kirk and crew are called upon once again to save mankind. They discover the strange sound is actually the call of the humpback whale - which has been hunted to extinction. Kirk and his crew have only one choice - to attempt to time travel back into the 20th century, locate a whale, and bring it back to 23rd century Earth to reply to the probe.

Kirk: Spock, where the hell's the power you promised?
Spock: One damn minute, Admiral.

Kirk: [Explaining Spock's odd behavior] Oh, him? He's harmless. Back in the sixties, he was part of the free speech movement at Berkeley. I think he did a little too much LDS.
Dr. Gillian Taylor: LDS?

Spock: They like you very much, but they are not the hell "your" whales.
Dr. Gillian Taylor: I suppose they told you that.
Spock: The hell they did.

Spock: Your use of language has altered since our arrival. It is currently laced with, shall we say, more colorful metaphors, "double dumb-ass on you" and so forth.
Kirk: Oh, you mean the profanity?
Spock: Yes.
Kirk: Well that's simply the way they talk here. Nobody pays any attention to you unless you swear every other word.

Dr. Gillian Taylor: Don't tell me! You're from outer space.
Kirk: No, I'm from Iowa. I only work in outer space.

It's impossible to say which is the best Star Trek film: The Voyage Home, or The Wrath of Khan. They're such radically different films, but both are excellent.

Star Trek: The Voyage Home maybe wins due to being so unusual, and also having a great ecological message, being funny, and for being highly accessible to non Star Trek fans.

It's also noteworthy the Leonard Nimoy had a great deal to do with developing the story itself, and he also directed the film.

classic sci-fi w/better chemistry than the series.

I really enjoyed this film. I thought it to be highly entertaining but also a sobering reminder that we humans have the power (and, sadly, the will) to drive animal species to extinction. I liked how Kirk and crew headed back to Earth to be judged for the crimes committed in the previous film and yet committed themselves to saving Earth rather than taking advantage of the "stay away" order to escape.
