A nicely crafted drug running film starring Michael Fassbinder, Javier Bardem, Brad Pitt, Cameron Diaz, and Penelope Cruz. Throw in Bruno Ganz, Ruben Blades, and Rosie Perez and you would have to be a really, really inept director to waste these actors. Forget reality and go along with the film and the conversations and you will be ok.

Wow. A movie with this much pedigree should not have been such a mutt! So Sad.

Going against the grain of the other comments, but I liked the story. Not a typical Hollywood story. And Diaz is great.

This is the first dvd I have borrowed that I could not watch, it was too boring and poorly written from the start.

Why I can't place a hold if there are 132 copies and 104 are available.

Umm....I wish someone would explain the first half of the movie, because nothing makes sense. Slow and jubbled. Not even exciting when you know everything is ruined. First time I have ever seen Cameron Diaz look sexy and first time I saw Javier so ugly. Fyi, For the "R" rating they had one super violent death, one large shootout and that was it. I was surprised for it being about drugs that it wasn't more aggressive, they barely even showed the drugs. Maybe the library version is edited...

Disjointed pretentious twaddle and without a single character worth caring about. Unlikely people and clunky unlikely "profound" dialogue.

A convoluted story of a lawyer who finds himself caught-up in in a nasty web of drug traffickers (including sellers in Mexico, the shippers, the buyers, the cartel and distributors). Meanwhile, a crew of "apparent" freelancers are trying to get-in on the action. In the end, everyone wants to kill everyone. Who gets out alive???

Positive reviews from Wikipedia: Richard Roeper: "Director Ridley Scott and screenwriter Cormac McCarthy have fashioned a... literate and richly textured tale... Shakespearean..." /// Danny Leigh of the BBC: "The real star is the script. It's like a Cormac McCarthy audiobook with visuals by Ridley Scott. It's black as night, engrossing and masterful." He also acclaimed the performances, particularly Diaz's /// Scott Foundas, chief film critic for Variety, wrote a defense of the film titled "Why The Counselor Is One of Ridley Scott's Best Films"... Foundas writes, "[the film] is bold and thrilling in ways that mainstream American movies rarely are, and its rejection suggests what little appetite there is for real daring at the multiplex nowadays."

Lot'sa of great quotes from IMDb:
Reiner: Men are attracted to flawed women too of course, but their illusion is that they can fix them. They just want to be entertained. The truth about women is that you can do anything to them except bore them.

Reiner: Are you really that cold?
Malkina: The truth has no temperature.

Westray: Well, I'm perfectly willing to believe you had nothing to do with this but I'm not the party you have to convince.
Counselor: Convince of what, for Christ sake?
Westray: That this is some sort of coincidence. Because they don't really believe in coincidences. They've heard of them. They've just never seen one.
