The Dawnthief spell--designed to destroy the world, but cast to save it--has torn a hole in the sky, a pathway into the dragon dimension, and, through it, unfriendly eyes are turning to Balaia. With war already sweeping the land, there are no armies to send against the dragons. All that stands between Balaia and complete dominion by these tyrannous beasts is a tiny, but legendary band of mercenaries: The Raven. And if they fail, Balaia will fall beneath the wings of countless dragons.

WCLS does have "Dawnthief" the first book in this trilogy, contrary to what the previous commenter wrote. It is accurate to say these novels should be read in order, in order to understand the plot of Noonshade, or even its title.
There are several unique and fascinating perspectives introduced to readers in this book. These include stream-of consciousness thoughts of a man stuck in wolf shape, and the alien, powerful reality of dragons.
Barclay, being British, frequently over-focused on the minutia of magic and spell-casting in his world.
Overall, I deem Barclay to be a journeyman author who manages to interweave numerous plots/subplots into an almost seamless story, although at times his scene jumps are a bit disorienting due to their abruptness.
I rarely finish books these days, but I did complete both Dawnthief and Noonshade. The fact that Barclay held my attention and interest throughout the tales informs me that, for those of us who enjoy good fantasy novels with interesting, well-developed characters and unusual plot premises, Barclay is well worth checking out. I think you won't be disappointed.
