This unwinding of a mystery from the 1950s by the family matriarch is ultimately disappointing, although the portrait of the life of a poor Italian family in the 1930s and 1940s is interesting.
This was a novel nominated for the Giller long list this year. It surprised me as a darn good story with some playful language and a mystery too. It was a little stuffy to begin with but persevere and be rewarded.
