Evelina Cooper, the niece of the great Sherlock Holmes, is poised to enjoy her first Season in London Society. But there's a murderer to deal with, not to mention missing automatons, a sorcerer, and a talking mouse. In a Victorian era ruled by a council of ruthless steam barons, mechanical power is the real monarch and sorcery the demon enemy of the Empire. Nevertheless, the most coveted weapon is magic that can run machines -- something Evelina has secretly mastered. But rather than making her fortune, her special talents could mean death or an eternity as a guest of Her Majesty's secret laboratories. What's a polite young lady to do but mind her manners and pray she's never found out?

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Rather a mash-up of genres, with Victorian romance swirling through the steampunk and fantasy elements, but that works for me. I liked Evaline, our protagonist - she's smart and intrepid, in addition to being quite magically-gifted.

Readers may wish the editors had culled some of the internal dialogue, which tends to repeat itself in a kinda YA way, but I just skipped that stuff and moved on to the next thing that happened so no big problem. Looking forward to the next two books!

What a refreshing break from the silliness of steampunk! Often times, alternative universes are a ploy for writers to write stories lacking research with unbelievable characters that break all of the laws of science. Not so with this first installation of this book series. Clever, clever use of science and magic without having the plot hinged on such eccentricities. The characters are great, shining through the fog and gas lamp light of the novel. At times, the plot slows down for the characters to talk and it may bother those who are wanting a novel packed with action. Still, for those who like to enjoy the history bending scenery, this is a good offering.

Book would have been better with some ruthless editing. It was far too long with nothing much happening.

This an inventive, entertaining read for fans of steampunk. Evie is a smart, progressive woman for her time & niece to Sherlock Holmes. The plot is complex, full of great characters & all the cool gizmos you'd expect from a book in this genre. I'm particularly fond of Mouse & Bird, her tiny mechanical sidekicks.
It takes a little time to get going as the author introduces a raft of characters & builds her world but hang in there.
I have read the second one, A Study In Darkness, and it's even better so now I'm waiting for the third in this entertaining, well written trilogy.
