VERY GOOD compilation of 10 cuts of Monk's work from 1950's.
Has a well chosen set list (including one of my fav's 'Bemsha Swing') recorded in a variety of contexts, all with excellent sidemen, including John Coltrane.
This CD provides an excellent way to either reminisce or hear for the first time the excellent work of one of the advanced jazz piano masters as he starts to 'step outside'.

It's great the library has this in its collection. If you listen to just one of Thelonious Monk's recordings, I recommend this one for starters. It is, for lack of a better description, some of his "more accessible" work. And it contains, as the CD title puts it, some of his very best.

I am glad to say I saw Thelonious Monk play in a small Jazz Club in San Francisco called the Both/And. Monk is an acquired taste, since he likes to stray from the melody and hit notes others might say are flat. For myself, I find him fun in that you never know what to expect. I am sure he was experimenting when he recorded the music. See if your ears and mind can accept the interpretations of jazz standards by Thelonious Monk.
