Amber Hewerdine has been suffering from chronic insomnia ever since her best friend's tragic death. As a last resort, she visits a hypnotherapist, doubtful that anything will really change. Under hypnosis, Amber hears herself saying "kind, cruel, kind of cruel." The words awaken a vague memory, but she dismisses the whole episode as nonsense. Two hours later, however, Amber is arrested for the brutal murder of a woman she's never heard of, and the only way she can clear her name is by remembering exactly where she's seen those words before.

Married detectives Charlotte "Charlie" Zailer and Simon Waterhouse are once again on the case, as the investigation unexpectedly reveals a shocking insight into Simon's psyche, in anothe gripping page-turner from the author of Lasting Damage .

(The seventh book in the Culver Valley Crime series)

Aug 09, 2015

English novel about a woman who may have a clue to the murders of two women in housefires. The story intricately involves the psychiatrist she ends up seeing and her extended family. Very confusing plot analysis and storytelling of the heroine and psychiatrist points of view and not very meaningful. Waste of time here - nothing revelatory.

Something kept me reading... perhaps my wish and expectation that ms. hannah would pull it off at the end?. Far too long and every situation and interaction seemed complicated for the SAKE of confusion, rather than plot! Do I sound like a frustrated reader?! I feel she took hold of a story too ambitious for her abilities.

Another great read by Hannah. I have read most of her books and they are all totally absorbing page turners.

Sophie Hannah always provides a great read. Totally engrossing.

"In this 7th novel to feature Sergeant Charlotte "Charlie" Zailer and Detective Simon Waterhouse, Charlie's trying to quit smoking with the help of a hypnotherapist. While waiting for her appointment, she speaks with a fellow client who repeats a phrase ("kind, cruel, kind of cruel") that had been found at the scene of a brutal crime. When the woman is brought in for questioning, her complex and unusual (perhaps even suspicious) background complicates the investigation. Because this complex series builds relationships from book to book and incorporates a lot of characters, newcomers should start at the beginning, with Little Face."
