An extraordinarily beautiful Amish woman, a dangerous femme fatale, is the central figure in a story that reveals a dark side of Painters Mill and its seemingly perfect Amish world

A rainy night, an Amish father returning home with his three children, a speeding car hurtling toward them out of nowhere.

What at first seems like a tragic, but routine car accident suddenly takes on a more sinister cast as evidence emerges that nothing about the crash is accidental. But who would want to kill an Amish deacon and two of his children? He leaves behind a grieving widow and a young boy who clings to life in the intensive care wing of a hospital, unable to communicate. He may be the only one who knows what happened that night. Desperate to find out who killed her best friend's husband and why,Kate begins to suspect she is not looking for a reckless drunk, but instead is on the trail of a cold blooded killer amid the residents of Painter's Mill. It is a search that takes her on a chilling journey into the darkest reaches of the human heart and makes her question everything she has ever believed about the Amish culture into which she was born.

This is the fifth book in the Kate Burkholder series set in Amish country in Ohio. Kate, the police chief, was raised in the faith, but was excommunicated. She still has conflicts about her loyalty to the Amish community versus the "English" as they call the outsiders. The mysteries usually involve the Amish people as victims and / or perpetrators of crimes. The books are nice, solid mystery / police procedural reads. As with all series I always recommend starting with the first in the set, as the history of the main character explains her subsequent behaviors / conflicts. If you are wondering.... a good source to find the first in almost any author's series is " Fantastic Fiction" a GREAT website!!!!

Pleasantly surprised by this book, much better than I expected. Castillo seems to be running out of room for the setting of her novels before she runs totally runs out plot credibility. This one, however, was quite entertaining and I did not expect the twist at the end

give the Amish a rest. read 1 book you read them all

A patron review from the Adult Summer Game: "An interesting story about murder in the Amish community. We get to know the sheriff- Kate Burkholder- as she works to solve the case. A good insight into the Amish way of life."

I'm a fan of Linda Castillo's Kate Burkholder series, and Her Last Breath didn't disappoint. The book slammed me with heartbreak at the very start. An Amish man -- obviously a loving husband and father -- and his three children are broadsided by a speeding truck that has been modified to cause the greatest possible destruction. Only the oldest child survives. Kate Burkholder and her team must trace the clues back to the murderer. Adding to the intrigue of this particular novel are Kate's ambiguous relationship with John Tomasetti and the discovery of bones that relate to a well-guarded secret in Kate's own past.

Once or twice in Castillo's previous novels, I've figured out who the badguy was before the big reveal. Not so in Her Last Breath. In this case, the moment of revelation itself was unexpected, not to mention the fact that I didn't remotely suspect the perpetrator's identity. I also liked that, once the murderer was revealed, the resolution didn't come immediately.

Castillo's next book in the series, The Dead Will Tell, comes out next week. I'll be in line.

This was not what I expected. Finding swear words within the first few pages, I was done with it. It's going back to the library. Not for me.

Linda Castillo is a fine writer. I appreciate the oblique references to sex and violence, especially when telling a story with both!
