Sixteen-year-old Kyra, a highly-skilled potions master, is the only one who knows her kingdom is on the verge of destruction-which means she's the only one who can save it. Faced with no other choice, Kyra decides to do what she does best: poison the kingdom's future ruler, who also happens to be her former best friend. But, for the first time ever, her poisoned dart misses. Now a fugitive instead of a hero, Kyra is caught in a game of hide-and-seek with the king's army and her potioner ex-boyfriend, Hal. At least she's not alone. She's armed with her vital potions, a too-cute pig, and Fred, the charming adventurer she can't stop thinking about. Kyra is determined to get herself a second chance (at murder), but will she be able to find and defeat the princess before Hal and the army find her?

Kyra is not your typical murderer, and she's certainly no damsel-in-distress-she's the lovable and quick-witted hero of this romantic novel that has all the right ingredients to make teen girls swoon. Praise for Poison: "A frothy confection of a fairy tale featuring poisoners, princesses, perfumers and pigs, none of whom are exactly what they appear (except maybe the pigs) . Good silly fun-a refreshing antidote to a genre overflowing with grit and gloom." -Kirkus Reviews "This is a frothy fantasy confection filled with quick-witted dialogue, cliff-hanger chapter endings, and plenty of plot twists to keep readers guessing. With a strong and independent main character, a dash of romance, and plenty of magic and potions, readers tiring of damsel-in-distress stories are sure to applaud Kyra and her madcap adventures." - Booklist Online "Filled with unexpected twists, this frothy fantasy adventure offers readers a story with plenty of action, engaging humor, and a dollop of romance...[M]any young teen and tween fantasy fans are likely to snap up this quick read with a feisty heroine." - School Library Journal "A fine rollicking adventure from start to finish. Zinn has crafted a marvelous tale." -Horn Book "Extraordinary." -Jennifer L. Holm, New York Times best-selling author
"Bridget Zinn's POISON is an absolute charmer of a book, full of adventure and romance and fun. I give it five stars-with an extra star for the cutest pig character you will ever meet." -Sarah Prineas, author of The Magic Thief series and the Winterling trilogy

Characters: 8/10
Plot: 10/10
Writing: 9/10
This story was told much in the tone of Gail Carson Levine, Jessica Day George, or Shannon Hale. I laughed out loud by the third page, and I zoomed through the whole thing in a few hours. It was lighthearted while still maintaining high stakes. The plot points revealed strategically throughout the book kept the suspense up and kept me intrigued. While I could predict that certain people or objects would be significant, I didn't guess *how* they would be, so those twists were fun. The only thing that bothered me was how Fred was quickly established as extremely attractive; this is just a personal preference, but I wish there were more YA novels with plain or unattractive love interests.
I'm saddened that this debut was also Zinn's last novel. I would have happily read more of her stories.

Poison stars a sixteen-year-old potions master, Kyra, in her quest to assassinate her best friend and future queen, Princess Ariana. The novel starts off a bit too slow, though it's worth the wait with its page turning conclusion. I've never read a book with such a unique plot, every page left me wondering what Kyra's next move would be. Though I didn’t find Kyra as likeable as I would've wanted. How can I cheer for someone who plans to assassinate her best friend through any means possible? The way she mistreats everyone around her almost made me cheer for the other guys. Despite that, Poison is a novel with a strong plot and (mostly) likeable characters.

it was amazing. I couldn't put the book down. I have never read a book so fast.

Zinns novel is a constant, high spirited adventure. Kyra “Kitty” is a strong lead character. She sticks by what she thinks is right even though it may be at personal cost to her. The story is filled with fun whimsical imagery and the supporting characters are all strong and have separate distinct characteristics. It truly is a shame that the author, who was also a librarian, passed away before she could see her first novel published.

um. I thought the book was okay. I didn't really care for the whole witch spark thing. and I don't really like the whole magic and sorcery thing either, but I thought it was good. I thought the plot was okay, but I am a little disappointed that it was on my summer reading list. I wish it didn't really make it on there. but oh, well!

This book comes with a very sad story. Bridget Zinn wrote this book and got diagnosed with cancer shortly after. She died in 2011 and her family and friends got this book published in her memory. It was a great book and I am glad they could do that for her.

Good book! The plot is fresh and fast-paced, the characters are quirky and endearing, and the romance is cute but not overwhelming. There's a bit of magic and fantasy (witches, special abilities) that makes the book a thoroughly enjoyable read.
This is a note not about the book, but about the author: After I read the book, I googled the author to see if there would be a sequel. It was an absolutely heartbreaking moment when I read she died from cancer before her book was published. Her dream was to get a book published and now it has! RIP Bridget Zinn. I enjoyed your book very much. <3
