Set on the Minnesota prairies in 1987 during a catastrophic drought season that only contributes to the demise of the family farms, Little Wolves features two intertwining narrators - a father searching for answers after his son commits a heinous murder and a pastor's wife who has returned to the town for mysterious reasons of her own. It is a penetrating look at small-town America, reminiscent of Russell Banks' Sweet Hereafter (Harper Perennial, 1991). Driven by a powerful murder mystery, Thomas Maltman's second novel is a page-turning triumph.

Hauntingly beautiful. Poignant and powerful. This is a wonderful story of a woman's longing for answers about the accident that claimed her mother's life and left her hand disfigured. Clara moves to a small town with her husband, Logan - a Lutheran pastor - while she is carrying their first child. She is led by old stories told to her by her father.

Seth is a troubled teenager who loves animals. He rescued some coyote pups (little wolves) and raised them until they were old enough to fend for themselves. One day, Seth takes a gun, walks into town, and shoots the town's sheriff in the face before committing suicide in a corn field. His devastated father searches for reasons as to why his son would do such a terrible thing.

The two stories intertwine. Other lives are also touched by these events. The "little wolves" also play a role. I highly recommend this novel!

Local writer Thomas Maltman tells a small town Minnesota story that puts an event decades past into fresh light when a young Lutheran minister and his wife move to this prairie town. When the sheriff is murdered by a high school boy, old secrets and long-held grievances percolate into the present, changing everyone as the mystery unfolds. Wonderful storytelling, characters and sense of place.
