Prioress Eleanor, Crowner Ralf, and other continuing characters in solving mysteries in this series have matured a bit since the last book and their stories move on, which gives us a satisfying feeling of progress instead of static actors in the series. As a historical mystery fan, I find Royal's research and writing style very satisfying to read. The characters are believable, the messages for our time thought provoking, and her ability to help us see the real life of the time puts us in the period and place. The ending, after the murders were solved, was appropriate and probably leading us to the next book.
