As much as I hate the genre tag "chillwave," I can't think of a better name for this. Post-rave electro-comedown music? A little clumsy. This is the second album from Alan Palomo aka Neon Indian (not to be confused with Neon Trees), who as far as I know is not an Indian. When I played this in class, one kid said "Why are you listening to video game music?" And it does sound like 80s/90s Nintendo themes reconfigured for vintage keyboards. It's pleasant as background music, but like much of the genre, the vocals are wispy, the music derivative and the whole thing a little too easy to ignore. While inspired by Helsinki, there's little frosty or icy about this. Also see Washed Out, Toro y Moi and M83.
