I just couldn't get into it, have been reading the Carol Jordan/Tony Hill novels and the characters in this story did not interest me. Too much emphasis on personal relationships, like the Kay Scarpetta stories by Patricia Cornwell - I stopped reading her a few years ago.

The ending was very good, with a twist that I didn't guess until shortly before it developed. The rest of the book, though, seemed to lack a good pace and at times felt almost stagnant

Engaging read but the perpetrator is easy to guess by a process of elimination half to two thirds of the way in, so it becomes more of a whydunit than a whodunit. Not a literary work of art by any means and could have been easily shortened a bit. Would be considered a progressive "chick-novel" by men.

I found this novel under "Staff Picks" at the North Gloucester Library and had never read Val McDermid so when I saw it, I picked it up immediately. What a huge treat. This tale is a great murder mystery, well-written and gave me a glimpse into a world where I was unfamiliar. If this is "not one of her best" as others reviewers mentioned, then I can't wait to read her other books. The first 50 pages were tough but then I couldn't put it down.

This mystery reminds me of an author's first mystery book. Too much repetition of the details covering the same murders from different characters' perspectives made the book too long for me. Also, expect lots of small talk as the characters meet each other. I felt that the author got carried away with the love lives of the lesbian characters. Partners are easily come by and just as easily eliminated. Magda comes across as a blonde bimbo, unlike what I would expect of someone who works in a cancer clinic. The ending caught me by surprise, but then the author did point every finger at only one character. I fell for it! Easy book to pick up after a short time away.

I am a big Val McDermid fan, and this book, while it held my interest, wound up being a huge disappointment. I am willing to suspend disbelief, but this crosses the line into absurd. One wonders what unresolved sexual fantasies she has. P.S. Athena, right on!! Could not have said it better myself.

The story is just too contrived and the characters flat... I don't like the constant preaching about society's misconceptions of alternative lifestyles. Wasn't this supposed to be a mystery?

A fun, quick read by an author who is usually a much deeper writer (with much darker themes). I read this in two days and think it's great for a summer book.

Except for the mobile phones and businesses, this book might have been written sixty years ago. Serial killer lesbian, marriage wrecker lesbian, nearly adulterous lesbian, etc. It's like the pulp paperbacks of my teens. Don't waste your time.

I agree this is not one of her best. It hinges on such a huge coincidence and also telegraphs the plot. Still, it does move along in an absorbing fashion if you can ignore the clunkiness.
