I couldn’t help comparing this with the 1959 version, with Stephen Boyd and Charlton Heston as Messala and Judah, respectively. Both actors exuded male charm, their presences filled the screen every time they appeared—which is absent from this version. The insertion of sex and nudity could not make this new version better and the removal of all the powerful mystical scenes with the Christ is a terrible loss. One specific scene of the old movie is of intense beauty: the Wise Men visit Mary, Joseph and the Christ child in the stable; not a word was exchanged, yet the scene is impregnated with unpretentious beauty and its power is undeniable. No wonder this version won no prizes while the other was the winner of 11 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Actor and Best Director! Skip it.
