After leaving Cambridge University and a job at a London publisher, Polly Evans moved to Hong Kong, where she spent many happy hours as editor of the city's biggest entertainment weekly. But fighting deadlines from an office chair seemed just too easy. So Polly set off on a voyage of discovery around Spain -- on a bicycle. From the thigh-burning ascents of the Pyrenees to the relentless olive groves of Andalusia, she found more adventure than she bargained for, including nail-biting encounters with a sprightly pig, over-zealous suitors, and locals who questioned her morality, all while indulging her love of regional cooking. While she pedaled, Polly pondered some of the more lurid details of Spanish history: the king who collected pickled heads, the queen who toured the country with her husband's moldering corpse, and the unfortunate duchess who lost her feet. And wherever she cycled, she ate and ate.

A fun read for anyone with a love of Spain, cycling or just good travel writing. Evans is British journalist who goes to work in Hong Kong as a magazine editor. She soon finds herself needing to escape the confines of big city life and, with a working knowledge of Spain and Spanish, decides to bicycle 1,000 miles across Spain. She starts her journey in San Sebastian in the north and cycles to Barcelona and then flies to Malaga and cycles north to Madrid. Despite the perils of it all - getting lost, drenched, crashing into ditches, or being chased by wild pigs and dogs - she finds a strength of purpose and spirit she didn’t know she had. “I’d been transformed from a flabby nervous wreck to a taut, lean woman in total control.”

This book was unfortunately, not what I expected at all. It was a book about someone's journey and transformation in Spain (similar to "On the Trail of Marco Polo"). I thought it was going to be about bike + food touring in Spain rather than someone's narrative.
