In Defense of Principles
NGOs and Human Rights in CanadaBook - 2010
Since 9/11 and the onset of the "war on terror," theprincipal challenge confronting liberal democracies has been to balancefreedom with security and individual with collective rights. This booksheds new light on the evolution of human rights norms in liberaldemocracies by charting the activism of four Canadian NGOs on issues ofrefugee rights, hate speech, and the death penalty, including their useof difficult, often controversial legal cases as platforms to asserthuman rights principles and shape judicial policy-making. The strugglesof these NGOs reveal not only the fragility but also the resilience ofideas about rights in liberal democracies.
