In 1935, inmates at the Cold Mountain Correctional Facility call Death Row "The Green Mile" because of the dark green linoleum floor. Paul Edgecomb is the head guard on the Green Mile when a new inmate is brought into his custody: John Coffey, convicted of the sadistic murder of two young girls. Despite his size and the fearsome crimes for which he's serving time, Coffey seems to be a kind person who behaves more like an child than a criminal. Soon Edgecomb and two of his fellow guards, Howell and Stanton notice that he's able to perform what seem to be miracles of healing among his fellow inmates, leading them to wonder if he could have committed the crimes with which he was charged.

The greatest book to film adaptation of all time. PERIOD. I love this film so much, i cannot put it into words. The atmosphere, the acting, the writing, all hit their marks. Definitely should have won the Oscar for Best Picture.

I've seen this movie several times. Tom Hanks is one of my favourite actors and in this movie he excels as do all the actors. It is amazing how the snivelling Percy can evoke the intense feeling of dislike and you know it is just a movie, or "John Coffey" Micheal Clark Duncan is able to make you feel like you want to adopt him. He's been sentenced to death for the rape and murder of two small girls, after all! Great acting all around, interesting stage sets and an interesting story! I will probably watch this again sometime.

Not sure what took me so long to see this movie- easily one of my favorites now. Runs a little long but there isn't any wasted time in the movie.

Magnificent performance by Tom Hanks.

This is a 1999 American fantasy-crime drama directed by Frank Darabont, based on the 1996 Stephen King novel of the same name.
The film tells the story of Paul's life as a death row corrections officer during the Great Depression in the United States, and the supernatural events he witnessed.
Although I don't believe in supernatural power, this movie is well-crafted so that anybody could be moved and fascinated by John Coffey's magic power.

Excellent movie!

I read this when it was in serial form and liked it. I had my own idea of what the lead man looked like and it wasn't Tom Hanks. The movie was excellent and helped me visualize stuff in the book that had me wondering about, but at first, couldn't get over Tom Hanks being in the lead role, and I don't have a thing against Tom Hanks, his face is probably too boyish for what I pictured Paul looked like. Now that I've seen it a few times, I still can't get over Tom Hanks in the role, but it doesn't bother me as much since the movie is really good. I still cry and still have all the emotions I did when I first read the serials, and saw the movie the first time. As a matter of fact, I'm checking it out again to see it. One of several movies that I will bother to see again and again.

Old Paul Edgecomb: They usually call death row the Last Mile, but we called ours the Green Mile, because the floor was the color of faded limes. We had the electric chair then. Old Sparky, we called it. I've lived a lot of years, Ellie, but 1935 takes the prize. That was the year I had the worst urinary infection of my life. That was also the year of John Coffey and the two dead girls.

Paul Edgecomb: Your name is John Coffey?
John Coffey: Yes sir boss. Like the drink, only not spelled the same.
Paul Edgecomb: Oh, you can spell can you?
John Coffey: Just my name boss

Frightening or Intense Scenes: There is a scene in which an execution by electrocution got prolonged, very prolonged. This may be hard to watch for the young and the more sensitive viewers.
