A resilient and quirky colony of church mice fears another Great X more than they fear cats. Under Mouse Mistress Hildegarde's leadership, they save themselves from one danger after another--sometimes just by the skin of their tails! Can one ultimate act of bravery during the feast day of St. Francis get Father Murphy to bless these mice and keep them safe forever?Rife with humor and personality, this young middle-grade novel has an old-fashioned feel with the makings of a modern classic.

Great novel to read to your young animal lover. My 8 yr old loved it and wishes there were a series of these to read.

There are a few funny parts in this book, but it isn't as good as I expected. I didn't really like any of the characters, and so the whole worry about the cats at the Blessing of the Animals and the sticky traps was not suspenseful, because I didn't care if they got trapped or eaten or not.

Hildegarde the mouse mistress joins Avi's Poppy and Kate DiCamillo's Despereaux as a brave and resourceful leader in this adventure set in a church building and its yard. Architectural terms unfamiliar to children are illustrated in a map at the start of the book. Eric Rohmann's detailed drawings depict the emotions and action in this tale of danger and loyalty.
This would be a gripping read aloud in families and in classrooms.

I was prepared to adore this book, since I am a great admirer of other works by Ms. Lowry. I was disappointed. I would recommend instead Margery Sharp's Miss Bianca books to anyone wanting wonderful stories about bands of anthropomorphic mice. Mistress Hildegarde pales in comparison.
