"George Stevens' Woman of the Year, conceived to build on the smashing comeback Katherine Hepburn had made in The Philadelphia Story, marked the beginning of the personal and professional union between Hepburn and Spencer Tracy, who would go on to make eight more films together. This tale of two newspaper reporters, who wed and then discover that their careers aren't so compatible, forges a fresh and realistic vision of what marriage can be. The freewheeling but pinpoint-sharp screenplay by Ring Lardner Jr. and Michael Kanin won an Academy Award, and Hepburn received a nomination for her performance. Woman of the Year is a dazzling, funny and rueful observation of what it takes for men and women to get along--both in the workplace and outside it"--Container.

An oldie drama about a marriage in which the wife rules the roost. In this marriage one spouse is a master and one a commander.

1942's "Woman of the Year" was the very first of eight Hollywood productions to pair actors, Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn together.

In this vintage "battle-of-the-sexes" Rom-Com - It's clearly Hepburn's "Tess Harding" character (as an international columnist) who strives to wear the pants in this family.

But, that 's not to say that Tracy's "Sam Craig" character (as a gruff, NYC sports writer) doesn't get the opportunity to verbally knock this chatty dame down a few pegs from her lofty position on the ladder of success.

"Woman of the Year" is a 1940's style "battle-of-the-sexes" story where it's both parties who want to be the one who's wearing the pants in this rocky relationship.

When it comes to the realm of romance - Spencer Tracy (as sportswriter, Sam Craig) and Katharine Hepburn (as international columnist, Tess Harding) are the "least-likely-to succeed" couple.

Matching wits and wisecracks against each other - Tracy and Hepburn verbally duke it out on screen for the obvious enjoyment of the audience.

Filmed in b&w - "Woman of the Year" was directed by George Stevens. This would be the first of 8 films that paired Tracy and Hepburn together.

Hepburn is terrific. Tracy, not so much, because his character is sketched out rather than written, so he could only do so much with what he was given. Apparently (per iMDb) the original ending, which has been lost, tested poorly, and so the rather regrettable one you see, which has NOT aged well, leaves a bad taste. Also, given the actors' later personal history, the fact that one of their characters' initial bonding episodes is through a drinking contest of sorts, is really quite sad.
