A plot that made little sense but kudos to its message, a review from the Guardian in 2009: But Poliakoff's film also deserves credit for offering a tangential spotlight on the motives of Neville Chamberlain's appeasers. In recent years Chamberlain has become adopted as a kind of cover-all bogeyman by neo-con pundits keen to justify the merits of "preventative war" on Iraq or Iran. Glorious 39 at least roots this argument in its proper historical context. It shows how the pacifist counsel of the Great War survivors was hijacked and twisted by rogue elements within the Tory government; a cabal of influential aristocrats that was determined to preserve the status quo at any cost.

Like to add the other hard choices in war times, such as on the fate of pets.

I watched the entire movie, but never really got interested in it. It's a BBC film. Maybe you need to be British to fully appreciate it?

I CAN GIVE YOU 39 REASONS WHY NOT TO VIEW THIS BORING AND PLOTLESS MOVIE I SEEN NO INTERACTIONS WITH THE NAZI'S. MAYBE I FELL ASLEEP FROM BOREDOM. SOME OF THE POSITIVE REVIEWS BY PATRONS MAY HAVE BEEN FALSE. WHAT A WASTE OF TIME. I WOULD THINK THE INVESTORS LOST MONEY ON THIS DEBACLE.

Excellent, must see movie, that exposes the dangers of "peace at all costs" philosophy. (I respectfully disagree with copurier3: some of the negative reviews may not be false, but have been originated by unfamiliarity with History.)

War propaganda film aimed at viewers ignorant of the following history: The Sudetenland had been within German realms for centuries and the people were German. The Allies (Serbia) started World War I. After years of fighting, the Germans accepted the Armistice per Allied calls for peace without victors or vanquished. But the Allies presided over the dismemberment of German lands. Twenty years later, Munich restored the Sudetenland to German control. There was nothing inherently wrong in this. Six months later, Czechoslovakia split in two. Hitler did not cause this: the same thing happened again in 1993. But he did occupy the Czech lands, violating the Munich agreement. Disillusioned, Chamberlain's cabinet gave a guaranty to Poland -- a radically anti-Hitler commitment. Hitler made an alliance with Stalin and invaded Poland. Chamberlain's cabinet declared war under the guaranty. Churchill did not become prime minister till eight months later. There were no such events as shown in the film.
Britons for peace were not fools or traitors. They reasonably expected defeat. Britain survived because Hitler later crazily attacked the USSR and declared war on the US. Churchill was not wise but lucky. His own fanciful military decisions almost always backfired, but his powerful new allies saved him.
The film's message: peacemakers may seem like nice people, but they are actually deluded or wicked; only war is acceptable. This insanity has a strong hold in the US and Israel today.
Structurally the film is a mess, supposedly told generations later by an omniscient child-witness. The ending is worthless.

I should have read all the reviews more carefully instead of taking this based on the excellent cast. Now I've learned more about Poliakoff from other work & actor interviews - my mind simply misses 95% of what he's up to. I had nothing else of great import to do at the time, thus this film. No, I guess I didn't like it, get it, enjoy the brilliant cast.

Although the intent was there, Glorious 39 somehow managed to get any sort of believable plot off the ground. With familiar faces like Bill Nighy, Jeremy Northam, Julie Christie, and David Tennant you'd think it would have occurred to at least one of them that none of it made much sense when boiled into one film. Romola Garai and Eddie Redmayne will be in plenty more movies ahead...hopefully they make some better choices when presented with screenplays.

(Contain spoilers.) This nightmarish drama portrays the peaceniks as I always imagine them: a bunch of lunatics. The movie portrays a modern Vehmgericht acting inside the very core of government and diluting the power of England to defend itself. After WWI a modern version of the ancient Vehme, the Fememord, started assassinating political enemies in Germany, such as are shown in this film. In this story, young MP’s who were very vocal and supporters of Mr. Churchill, were murdered; we do not know if any investigation is launched for a very simple reason: the movie restricts its actions to the Keyes family as they try to keep Ann from divulging their support for Hitler; we are given only a few scraps of what happens in the “outside” world. Considering that Chamberlain himself was member of the British Eugenics Society, the plot becomes more believable the more I watched the movie. The scene of dozens of people going to the veterinarian to put down their pets, in my view, is a portrayal of the Keyes, who would not mind some loses, so long as they could feel safe within their own world. The irony—not shown in the movie—is that the British finally stood up and fought against Hitler’s socialism—Nazi was the acronym for National SOCIALIST German Worker’s Party—and after the war became socialist. Very sad.

Fascinating film. Billed as a psychological thriller -- and they aren't kidding! Set in England just prior to WWII. And these were the good guys.... Great plot, great acting, ending a little weak but totally worth watching.

Well acted. Not entireably believable but suspenseful. Have to agree that the ending was a bit contrived.

We want people to feel defeated, to feel there's no hope. That way we can do our deal with Germany.

She said at least there is one silver lining to this war: one won't have to wake up every Friday morning wondering if one has got the guest list right for the weekend. But I expect the competition between her and Emerald Cunard will begin again very soon. They won't let a small thing like a war stop their entertaining.

Habeas corpus. Do you know what habeas corpus is, miss?
-Of course... Of course I do.
Well, it doesn't exist any more. It's gone. We can keep you as long as we want, wherever we want. Don't need to ask a judge any more, don't need to ask anybody. Don't even need to tell anyone where you've gone.
