Cat's Eye Scarf on p. 152 is a good one to start knitting lace.

A wide variety of lacy patterns from simple shawls and scarves to sweaters. Good instructions. Many patterns are graphed, as well as written out. At the back is a translation of yarn weights and metric body and needle sizes. Each pattern lists suggested skill level.
