Very few people know that Mark Twain (Samuel Clemens) wrote a major work on Joan of Arc. Still fewer know that he considered it not only his most important but also his best work. He spent twelve years in research and many months in France doing archival work, and then made several attempts until he felt he finally had the story he wanted to tell. He reached his conclusion about Joan's unique place in history only after studying in detail accounts written by both sides, the French and the English. This is a fascinating and remarkably accurate biography of the life and mission of Joan of Arc told by one of this country's greatest storytellers.

Mark Twain called this his best work, and that was my reason to open this novel. It is considered a well-researched biography of Joan of Arc, but is fiction told from the point of view of her childhood friend and secretary. Joan could neither read nor write and had no knowledge of war strategy, yet her presence united the French to victory in battle over the English.
The familiar Mark Twain comes through in the tall tales told by Joan’s soldiers discussing their triumphs. If you aren’t fascinated by battle maneuvers, the march forward becomes tedious. I finally conceded after seven of the 15 discs.

Beautiful. Informative. Funny. Enlightening. Brilliant. Inspiring. And more awesome superlatives. It's Twain. It's Joan of Arc. The author and his subject are a match made in literary heaven. I'm so glad that I found this gem. It applied flesh to the centuries old legend of a young woman on the edge. Thanks to both Twain and Joan for this magnificent tale.

I am so pleased that the Joco library will now carry this exceptional tale of Joan of Arc!

This is my favorite book written by Mark Twain. Listen and enjoy; however, it would be great if the library could pick up a written version. It is an excellent book and a classic!

It is difficult to find for purchase. I was able to pick up my edition through a Christian homeschooling website.
