Born (1571) in Milan, Spanish Empire - Michelangelo Caravaggio was an Italian painter of considerable talent who was active in Rome, Naples, and Sicily from the early 1590s to 1610.

Impressively compiled by notable, American art historian, Francine Prose - This glossy volume contains both informative biographical, as well as more than 50 examples of Caravaggio's most splendid paintings of all.

(*Note*) - In 1610 - Caravaggio (38 at the time) died of causes that have been a matter of historical debate and study for many years (with no concrete conclusion being satisfactorily arrived at so far).

Excellent small volume with a lot of information and sensitive discussion of the key paintings. To get the full benefit of the author's insights, it must be read with a volume of Caravaggio's paintings at hand.

This is a well written book with a lot of info. I would have given it 5 stars if it contained more of the paintings referred to in her text, a summary of history and characters, as well as an index.
