A quiet and visually beautiful film about the love affair between 23 year old English poet, John Keats, and the girl next door, Fanny Brawne.

Dieu_D Dec 12, 2014

Bright Star is a delicately beautiful and poetic tribute to the tragic love affair between the poet John Keats and the girl who lived next door, Fanny Brawne. A slow moving film that may not appeal to everyone, although the cinematography alone makes it worth watching.

I missed seeing Bright Star when it was in the theatre, but it was well worth the wait! I loved the performances and the fact that I didn't recognize any of the actors enhanced my enjoyment. I particularly loved Edie Martin as the little sister, "Toots". Although the love story could have been a little more developed, this is a very romantic film. Very clean as well; no swearing or nudity at all. Children probably wouldn't find much enjoyment but there's nothing here that you'd be afraid for them to see. Definitely a must see if you like romantic movies!

The poet and his muse. He describes their relationship as "a web you and I have woven, attached to this world but a separate world of our own invention". It is in this invented romanticized world that his creative genius flourished. A movie that deliberately unfolds painfully slowly so that the viewer is drawn into all the subtleties of the creative energy that comprised Keats.

The movie was beautifully shot. Fanny was incredibly unlikable, but maybe that is the point. I found the romance not believable and there was no chemistry between the Keats and Brawne. I was not vested in the romance what so ever, if anything for it to fail because she was so annoying and undeserving. But Brown was fantastic and hilarious, the saving grace.

It had a bright future with stars like Abbie Cornish and (the guy from Lilting? Good actor but whose name always escapes me???) but lost it's shimmer somewhere along the way.

This movie is amazing. Well worth the time and effort to watch. I got swept up in John and Fannie's love story as well as the time period and Keats' poetry. This film was beautifully done. I own and have watched dozens of times. Enjoy!

This movie has become one of my favourites. It's visually breathtaking. Has a wonderful, atmospheric soundtrack. The actors and actresses are fabulous. Beautiful costumes. Yes, it may be seen as 'slow paced' by some. But those are my favourite movies. This embodies everything of what the Romantic period was about. We need more of that in our society today,

If you want to know what romance was really like in the early 19th century, Bright Star is a pretty fair representation. True love was slow, and true lovers were often torn apart by a lack of money or prospects, or early death. Although this is not the best film that could possibly be re. John Keats and Fanny Brawne, the producers, actors and writers do their all with the known facts. If you like the Keira Knightly Pride and Prejudice, or similar pop versions of the past, this is not for you. If you like authentic, perfectly sad stories, put this one at the top of your list.

As a romance drama this is a slow one. Directing by NZ director Jane Campion, who gave us a far more superior 'Piano', followed a rather conventional story-telling approach. I was bored most of the time.

This film has been one of my favourites, for the last few years. It's made by Jane Campion, who is a very sensual filmmaker, concerned with mood and feeling in a way most Hollywood-movie and Netflix miniseries industry-professionals simply are not, anymore. The film documents a "high romance", played by two very DASHING and engaging young actors. I find it totally irresistible. I've come to think of this film as a friend. It's a good one to snuggle-up with, alone: if you're a "hopeless romantic", and don't have many people to share this unfortunate (and often tragic: see film) trait, with.

Bright Star highlights the love affair that develops between poet John Keats and girl-next-door Fanny Brawne, in a period where societal constraints dictated. The setting/scenery is pastoral and meant to be unhurried. In a style reminiscent of poetry itself, the movie is languorous, sensitive, contemplative, and sensual. A bit of a delightful gem.

A poem needs understanding through the senses. The point of diving into a lake is not immediately to swim to the shore but to be in the lake, to luxuriate in the sensation of water. You do not work the lake out, it is a experience beyond thought. Poetry soothes and emboldens the soul to accept the mystery.
