In poverty-stricken 1978 Laos, a man with a truck from the city was "somebody," a catch for even the prettiest village virgin. The corpse of one of these bucolic beauties turns up in Dr. Siri's morgue and his curiosity is piqued. The victim was tied to a tree and strangled but she had not, as the doctor had expected, been raped, although her flesh had been torn. And though the victim had clear, pale skin over most of her body, her hands and feet were gnarled, callused, and blistered.

On a trip to the hinterlands, Siri discovers that the beautiful female corpse bound to a tree has already risen to the status of a rural myth. This has happened many times before. He sets out to investigate this unprecedented phenomenon--a serial killer in peaceful Buddhist Laos--only to discover when he has identified the murderer that not only pretty maidens are at risk. Seventy-three-year-old coroners can be victims, too.

I loved the first two books in the series, but this one, which features the thought process of the killer, is gruesome and creepy. Couldn't read more than 1/4 of it.

Second book I've read in this series. I love the insights into another culture through humour and wonderful characters. The serial killer plot of this one did not ring true, however. If this is your first Dr Siri Paiboun book, don't give up: others are better.

I love the culture, the loving humor, so many things about the Dr. Siri series. The mystery is good and kept me very interested while the authors humor and characters are quite entertaining.

Dr Siri, the septugenarian National Coroner of Laos, tries to find a serial killer in this very funny mystery. The insights into the mind of the serial killer are trite and the book is marred by the occasional tumble into sentimentality, but these are minor faults set against the fine characterisation, vivid setting and gentle humour. Set in Laos in 1978, the charming and cynical Dr Siri has to cope with the bungling and corrupt Communist government, aided by a cast of colourful secondary characters.
