This short, quick read about a girl who's been abducted is achingly well-written if you can stomach it.

This story is a bit more than what you would expect from originally reading the summary the book gives you. However it makes you feel exactly what the author wants you to feel for the main character. Whether you determine it as anger or just pain, you feel the same way you imagine this character does. The book causes you to not only want the best for the main character, but forces you to question her decisions, and later on, question if you would have done the same. Considering that you probably haven't been placed in the same situation, you'll forever wonder what you would've done as this story imprints a permanent memory in your mind.

The story of Alice (not her real name) is a ripped-from-the-headlines tragedy. Hundreds of girls disappear every year and are never seen again. This novel gives the reader a view of what it’s like from the other side—the side of the victim.

The first-person perspective forces the reader into Alice’s viewpoint and never eases on the pressure. The effect is like that of being behind the wheel of a speeding car and nothing you do can stop it or slow its speed. Instead, you find yourself helplessly careening on to what promises to be certain disaster.

The almost matter-of-fact narrative is a brutal layout of the horror of a mundane life at the hands of a ruthless sexual predator, a monster who has managed to crush her spirit, cow her even when he can’t be seen and systematically made her into a sex slave and unwilling companion. Her jailer Ray is the boy next door, the father filled with bonhomie, whom everybody either loves or pities. He’s so devoted to his daughter, who apparently has problems. Alice has long ceased to wonder why no one sees through Ray’s façade or questions why she is so thin, stinks or has matted hair. Her plight is partially due to Ray’s adroitness at maintaining a charming face and also the willful blindness of people who avoid her because of her obvious strangeness.

The book makes you shudder, the bile almost rising to your throat, as Alice narrates her suicidal thoughts, her own rising cruelty, her casual sexual encounters that have nothing to do with lust or desire and her scorn for people who don’t understand how victims like herself become compliant in their own abuse and imprisonment.

Even though Alice’s existence narrows down to one monotonous day after another, the book rivets you to her life. You reel from it in shock only to turn helplessly to it again.

It’s a fast-paced book, one that you could finish in a couple of hours. But it is a ghastly tale, unsuitable for anyone under the age of 17. Even for adults, I would advise a warning label: THIS BOOK MIGHT PROVOKE TEARS AND BILE. PROCEED AT YOUR OWN RISK.

Reads like a lurid headline brought to life. An evil, twisted person kidnapped Alice, and now he's starting to think she's too old for his taste. It's almost unbearably tense and miserable to read, but by the end, you understand every decision Alice makes, and why.

This book was about a little girl who at a young age was taken from her school field trip by a pedophile who likes younger girls. He rapes her and forces her to become his image of a perfect little girl. This book will haunt you.

read this in one sitting, quite disturbing, but not too graphic. not sure why it is considered a Young Adult book, the subject matter is very adult. I choose the happy ending.

A stark look at a young girl’s life after she has been abducted by a pedophile. She lives a life of terror and abuse that is very hard to read about. I think the author deserves kudos for delivering such a honest look at this brutal subject but this was at times a very distrubing read.

This books ending is very sad. Although she never has to go through anything horid again, she shouldn't have died. She should have gone and saw her family before she died.

At first I thought this was a book about zombies. The title and even the blurb on the back sound like it could be zombies! But Living Dead Girl is actually about a little girl who was abducted while on a field trip when she was 10 years old, and who after five years of sexual and physical abuse by her kidnapper is completely numb inside, a living dead girl.

I tore through this short young adult novel in one sitting. Should young teenage girls tear through it? Yikes. It could potentially save lives, but there are some seriously disturbing sexual images in this story.

The ending is masterful but ambiguous, and I choose to believe that it’s a happy ending.

Then he is silent, a dark heavy weight on top of me. Pressing me down into the ground. Where all things must go. Where we one day will all be. Death to make the living. (p167)
