"Summer Stock" is clearly one of those predictable "Hey-Gang-Let's-Put-On-A-Show" musicals from Hollywood's heyday.

Even though this 1950, Technicolor picture had a pretty corny story-line - Overall - I found it to be fairly entertaining, in the long run.

"Summer Stock" is a very energetic picture that stars both Judy Garland and Gene Kelly.

Without question it's Judy Garland's famous "Get Happy" musical number that proves to be the absolute highlight of Summer Stock's singin', dancin', and romancin' story.

(*Be sure to watch vintage video clip*)

Released back in 1950 - This lively, Technicolor, MGM production features 13 songs in all where everybody (especially Gene Kelly) kicks up their heels as they move to the rhythm.

*Note* - If you really wanna enjoy this "Hey!-Let's-Put-On-A-Show" picture - It is best advised that you check reality at the door before sitting down to watch it.

GREAT 1950 MGM musical featuring the last role at MGM for 28 year old Judy Garland. Fun to see Judy looking a bit bigger and more mature, both face and everywhere else.
Fun pairing of just under 5' Judy with beautiful just over 5' Gloria De Haven (age 25) as the Falbury sisters,
Plot involves conflict between the Falbury family and the Wingaits.
Many excellent song/dance numbers, including 'Howdy Neighbor, Happy Harvest' with Judy filmed driving her new tractor back to the farm.
The Gene Kelly role was originally intended for Judy's earlier film partner Mickey Rooney. Lucky for us - Gene does an excellent job and is far more romantic than the enjoyable Mickey.
Gene does a terrific job in a dance sequence to 'You Wonderful You', squeaking on floor boards, dancing on paper, and more.
The rural community's party has a fun country dance 'Portland Fancy' where Judy and Gene have a dance competition with some terrific moves.
The end cut is the famous dance/song 'Get Happy' with Judy in black hat, jacket, black stockings, etc. It was shot two months after the rest of the film when Judy had lost the extra 20 pounds she had put on at the beginning. Judy's unfortunate health problems, etc. did shorten her film career - MGM cancelled her contract (mutual agreement) after Summer Stock.
Summer Stock is a VERY fun movie" - 'hardly Theatre; just a little barnyard entertainment.'
"Remember neighbor, when you work for Mother Nature...You get paid by Father Time".

This film moves slowly and Judy Garland's acting is erratic, but, overall, this is a cute, romantic, and entertaining movie.
