No single weapon has spread so much raw power to so many people in so little time--and had such a devastating effect--as the AK-47 assault rifle. This book examines the legacy of this world-changing weapon, from its creation as means of fighting the Nazis to its ubiquity today in every kind of conflict, from civil wars in Africa to gang wars in L.A.

An engrossing, unusual, and startling "biography" of the Ak-47, the world's most widely distributed and recognizable assault rifle. Kahaner traces the invention of the gun by a Soviet war vet to its uses in virtually every major conflict of the past 50 years (Vietnam, Latin America, Iraq), making the case that it may be the single most deadly weapon ever mdae. Though it occasionally veers into technical speak (muzzle velocity and so forth), Kahaner writes in a clear, simple style and he follows the gun to the world's hot spots in a way that is illuminating and forceful. "I didn't even have to use my Ak; today was a good day." -Ice Cube
