This was a very brave album to put out at that point in his career, just after Transformer, with it's radio hit, Walk on the wild side, where he had airplay and appeased the Velvet Underground crowd. Here he goes real deep, his producer went into a deep depression doing this recording (check out the liner notes), he felt they should just shelve the whole thing and never talk about! But put it out they did, it's lyrically heavy stuff, suicide, drug addiction, the dregs of society, and Lou mined that side of humanity for the balance of his career.
If you can stomach this, check out Coney island Baby, Street Hassle,The Blue Mask or New York, all as dark lyrically, but more uplifting musically,Lou was unlike any other.
