Breaking Ranks chronicles the coming of age of Benjamin Black, a Scotsman who lived in Israel as a teenager. Against a backdrop of Bedouin camel-racing, Christian holy sites and rooftop living in Tel Aviv, Black grew up, fell in love and became involved in politics. When conscripted to the army, he was forced to reconcile his peaceful philosophy with the realities of military service. Ultimately he fled his adopted country, becoming a draft dodger and an exile.
