Restless in Manhattan, student Bruno Cadogan heads to the city of his dreams, and of the thesis he is writing on the origins of the tango. He is in search of Julio Martel, a legendary but elusive tango singer, who he hopes will enlighten and inspire his writings on the tango. But once in Buenos Aires he finds he is searching for much more than a person as he becomes increasingly drawn into the mystery of Martel and his strange performances in random spots and abandoned buildings throughout the city. As he gradually untangles the story of Martel's life he also discovers the sad and unjust history of Buenos Aires, just as he is becoming utterly entranced by that city, and as the city is falling apart in the currency crisis of 2001. The Tango Singer is evocative, beautiful and fascinating - a book which magically uncovers the story of Buenos Aires and its inhabitants.
